Emmen is Lucerne's rebellious neighbour. Where steel was once smelted and viscose produced, one of Central Switzerland's most exciting cultural scenes now pulses. Viscosistadt has transformed from an industrial area into a creative quarter, Sedel from prison to concert legend. Welcome to Emmenbrücke.
Emmen – From Steelworks to Subculture
Emmen's history is one of transformation. Swiss Steel, the aircraft industry and Emmi shaped the image of a working-class town. Today, 900 aspiring designers and filmmakers study in Viscosistadt, bands rehearse in former prison cells, and the smell of steelworks has given way to craft cocktails. Lucerne is just 10 minutes away – but once you're here, you often don't want to leave.
Clubs & Nightlife
Emmen has a surprisingly vibrant scene:
- Sedel Musikzentrum – The legend. The former prison (operational until 1971) was converted into a music centre in 1981. Today, concerts take place weekly – from punk to metal to electronic. 52 rehearsal rooms in the old cells make Sedel the heart of Lucerne's music scene. Capacity: 250.
- Kopfklang Club – Switzerland's first hybrid club. House and techno in the old Viscose factory. Events take place partly at the fixed location, partly at changing venues – always with exquisite sound.
- Pasha Shisha Lounge – Sparkling lights, inviting sofas and one of the region's best shisha bars.
- Tramhüsli – The former 1927 tram waiting hall is now a heritage-listed bistro and bar with a large terrace. Under new management since 2025.
Culture & Events
Emmenbrücke has caught up culturally:
- Le Théâtre – Central Switzerland's event location. Up to 900 guests experience musicals, comedy, concerts and theatre in eight halls with state-of-the-art technology. Restaurant Prélude serves before and after shows.
- akku Kunstplattform – 500m² of contemporary art in the former shipping building of the Viscose factory. 4-6 exhibitions per year with local and national artists. Admission CHF 6.
- Viscosistadt – The 90,000m² site is Emmen's cultural heart. Besides Lucerne University of Applied Sciences (Design Film Art), it houses the Spinnerei event hall, Viscose Eventhalle (1,000m²) and Nylon 7 as an unconventional canteen.
- Kulturnacht Viscosistadt – Over 30 cultural creators open their doors. An autumn highlight.
Entertainment:
- blue Cinema Maxx – 8 screens, 1,900 seats, including 4DX cinema.
- Emmen Center – Over 200 shops and entertainment.
Popular Districts
Viscosistadt: The creative epicentre. Where 1,700 workers once produced viscose, films, artworks and start-ups now emerge. The 16,000m² riverside park on the Kleine Emme invites you to linger. The industrial architecture provides the perfect backdrop for events and exhibitions.
Emmenbrücke Centre: The commercial core with restaurants, bars and Emmen Center. The feRUS Hotel with its American grill is a meeting point for those who appreciate good meat and industrial charm.
Gersag: The sports district with stadium, sports halls and the region's only 16-hole disc golf course.
What Makes Emmen Special?
Emmen proves that transformation works. The industrial town has reinvented itself without forgetting its roots. At Sedel, international bands play in former prison cells; in Viscosistadt, tomorrow's filmmakers emerge. The charm lies in the contrast: steelworker heritage meets hipster culture, production halls meet art galleries. And while Lucerne shows postcard Switzerland, Emmen shows the future – raw, creative and surprisingly vibrant.
